Getting Started in Tableau - Part 1
- Click or tap the GET STARTED button in the center of the “Tableau for Teaching” window you opened using the link provided below.
- Enter your school email address and select DOWNLOAD NOW.
- Note that the download may take a few minutes.
- Watch for a message (most likely at the bottom of your screen) asking if you wish to Run or Save the file. Select Run. Alternately, in some browsers and depending on your settings, you may just need to click or tap on the fully downloaded exe file to run it.
- After running the exe file, a Tableau Desktop dialog box will display.
- After accepting the license agreement, select Install. (Note installing may take a few moments).
- You may be prompted by a dialogue box asking if you want the Tableau app to make changes to your device. If so, select Yes.
- After fully installing, Tableau will open with a dialog asking for you to activate the software or start a trial. Select the Activate link.
- Enter the activation key provided in the Tableau Access and Credentials Information, then select the Activate button.
- Enter your email address in the Email field. o In the lower right-hand corner of the Activate Tableau window, select Register. o A green checkmark should appear, along with the message Registration completed. o Select Continue. o The Tableau shortcut (icon) is now installed onto your computer’s Desktop.
- You should land on the Tableau homepage. In the upper right-hand corner, use the “minus sign” to minimize the Tableau software window. This should return you to the website home screen from which the application downloaded.
For now, answer the question below, then click or tap “Next”.

Getting Started in Tableau - Part 2
Back on the home screen from which the application downloaded, scroll to the bottom as necessary and select “EXPLORE LEARNING” to reach Tableau’s learning page:
Select “ALL TRAINING VIDEOS” at the bottom of that screen to open a full list of on-demand, free training tutorials. Categories include Getting Started, Connecting to Data, and Visual Analytics.
- Bookmark this page so that you may access the training videos easily in the future.
- From this point forward, you may access Tableau via the shortcut on your desktop. Maximize the Tableau window and click the “X” in the upper right-hand corner to close it out (there is no Logout button).
- Note that every 6 months (or so), Tableau assigns a new Activation Key to use with the installed version of the desktop software. When this occurs, you will need to reactive. The new Activation Key will be available through your instructor and/or the updated AHIMA VLab Login Credentials resource document.
